The Zombies Are Coming…

I can say now, pretty confidently, that both my children have strong interest in music and dance. Throughout the day, “Daddy finger, daddy finger, where are you????” can be heard streaming out of Ami’s room. This flows right into a howling rendition of “You’ve got a friend in me!” as she does a hippy sashay into the room.

Benson is drawn more to the dance. He has probably watched So You Think You Can Dance more than Sesame Street. Ask him to do his “FikSun” (last season’s winner) and he’ll break out into a wild dance routine…seen below:

Lately, Ben is getting his Michael Jackson groove on…if you’re going to learn to dance, learn from one of the legends. Songs like Beat it, Jam and Leave Me Alone are all common requests in our household. One song trumps them all…THRILLER! In the last blog post, I mentioned that Ben has a strange love/ hate relationship with all things scary; Beaker from The Muppet Show scares him to death but zombies oozing with blood and dancing down the street? No Problem!

Obviously, the next stage of this progression is an obsession with Plant vs. Zombies and so Ellen got a few stuffed characters from the game and set them up in the front room, just like the game. We then approach Ben, with serious looks on our faces, and say to him “Benson, we don’t want to scare you but..there is a HUGE wave of zombies coming here…they are in the front room. Ben gets a very tentative look on his face and slowly walks to the front room. Once he sees the set up, he starts bouncing up and down on his toes, waving his hands in the air and saying “oh my God!’ over and over again. Best reaction ever to anything he has experienced.

Bring on the next wave!

Teeny Wolf

Benson has a bit of a love-hate relationship with scary things. He is inexorably drawn to them whether it’s daddy jumping out of the dark, a zombie on a video, or a scary dude on Halloween in a mask. He seeks them out and cries for more…and yet, he always keeps a safe distance while partially covering his eyes.

His latest obsession is the Wolf Man at the Ann Arbor Farmer’s market. He plays the violin and if you tip him, he will slowly bow his head and then give off a convincing wolf howl that fades off into what sounds like a pack. He is really quite good. “Mommy, can we go see the Wolf Man?” He says. Ellen replies “I’m sorry Benson but he only plays on Saturdays.” “I wish it was Saturday” as he sulks away.

Saturday morning arrives and he hasn’t forgotten his quarry. He wakes up, gives a yawn and weakly asks…”Are we going to see the Wolf Man?” We load up and head to the market for some Wolf time and family pics with Myra Klarman ( ) You see, this is also Mother’s Day weekend and every year, our favorite professional photographer puts on her Cat in the Hat hat and takes picture of families for free. She then gives them away and they always turn out to be some of the best family pics we have.

The Phoenix rises from the ashes

March 31, 2014

I have really been itching to start writing some blog posts again. Between the time off work, starting a new career and the complete mess that Apple made with the new operating system, I’ve lost pretty much all of my old pictures due to this new Apple iCloud functionality, it’s been tough to get […]

Some people can sit and stare mesmerized for hours at a campfire. The flickering flames like snapping tentacles lapping at the onlookers relentlessly. Much like a snake charmer. The little dances in the fire can hypnotize. Water has the same effect on me…I love the water. No matter my current mood, whenever I am near […]

After the hour and a half drive, I spot the familiar marker that indicates that we have arrived at our destination. While most homes along this route have the standard driveway with a mailbox and address number used for identification, two lonely black iron gates, barely standing on either side of a dirt/grass path seemingly […]

For Memorial day this year, Ellen and I decided to have my family over for a BBQ. Burgers and hot dogs, steaks, chicken…it all sounds good but we want to do something a little special and different so I decide to smoke a brisket. Over the years, I have experimented with smoking this rather larger […]

Have you ever seen a serious wrestlers ears? They have usually been mangled beyond recognition. The grinding on the mat and the general stress that they are constantly put under, over time, transforms them from functional receptors of sound waves into something that wrestlers refer to as “cauliflower ear”…a very suitable nickname for the bulbous […]

If I could do it all over again, I think I would go into the diaper business. It is such a cash cow! We have easily gone through more than 10,000 diapers over the past few years. This is just one of the many things you learn as go through this confluence of events called raising children. Try finding […]
